The release date of NHL 21 has been pushed to October, and there will not be any next-gen versions, including Xbox Series X and PS5.

 
 

A blog post from the development team on the official EA NHL page notes that the game will launch in October instead of the usual September due to "extraordinary circumstances" most likely related to the impact of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. In addition, while the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions will be forward compatible, there will be no next-gen PS5 and Xbox Series X versions to accompany the consoles’ launches later in the fall.
 
"For NHL 21, we made the decision to focus on adding innovation and new features rather than the resource-heavy task of porting the game to new console technology," the statement reads. The team notes that NHL 21 should still be playable on next-gen consoles through "forward compatibility," but the focus will be on Xbox One and PS4.
 
The first look of the game will come in late August, with more details coming the closer we come to the reveal, with EA currently revealing that due to next-generation consoles they focuses on innovation and new features over porting it over to next-generation consoles. Due to forward compatibility you'll still be able to play Chel on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, but the next-generation versions of the series will undoubtedly be coming next year, hopefully along with an engine upgrade as well.
