As the saying goes: "Attack wins you games, defence wins you titles." We can figure out the importance of defence. So, do you know how to defend effectively in FIFA 20? Follow this short article, you can find the answer.
1. Don't rely on your AI
In FIFA 19, defending was a breeze. You could hold down X/A (contain) or R1/RB (second man press) to have one of your players press the opponent on the ball while the rest of your defenders would maintain a good shape. Now, mindlessly charging with your defenders is not effective; you have to be in control, patient and smart with your defending. In fact, you hardly want to contain or use the second man press at all, so you'll need to learn how to jockey (L2/LT) effectively instead. More on that later.
Jockeying In FIFA 20
Player positioning is one of the most important aspects of defending in FIFA 20. Bringing even just one defender out of position could result in an easy goal scoring opportunity for your opponent. This is why Jockeying is by far the most effective way to defend on FIFA 20, as it allows you to position your players for an interception without having to drag them out of position. The fast jockey can be performed by pressing and holding LT/L2 and RT/R2.
Controls
Tactical Defending vs. Legacy Defending: As before, there are two types of defensive styles in FIFA 20. Tactical Defense, which is a more manual scheme, is the default style, but you can change it to Legacy Defending in the settings. Some players find Legacy easier because it is less demanding in terms of timing. We won't recommend you to change it since online play only supports Tactical Defending, but if you only play offline and you can't really get to grips with Tactical, go ahead and try Legacy.
Slide Tackling
Only attempt slide tackles when you are defending desperately and feel as though a normal tackle will not win you the ball. NEVER slide from behind as this ALMOST CERTAINLY will result in a red-card, leaving you on the back-foot for the remainder of the game.
Clearances
Don’t try passing out from the back when under pressure – it’s not worth it. You’re better off clearing your lines than trying to pass the ball to a fellow teammate who is close-by. A lofted pass may take longer to perform as the player will take longer to kick the ball, the longer the kick is charged, however in my experience it is more effective with accuracy, direction and power.
