With the release of NBA 2K21, games on next gen consoles might see a price increase. In a press release this morning, Take-Two Interactive announced NBA 2K21 on the PS5 and Xbox Series X, as well as their current-gen counterparts. Noticeably, the next-gen standard versions of the game came with a suggested retail price of $69.99 USD —a $10 jump from the standard $59.99 for most AAA games.
 
Rather than using Microsoft’s Smart Delivery system, or whatever Sony’s solution ends up being, 2K is going its own way. Those who want to purchase NBA 2K21 on PS4 or Xbox One, and keep playing on PS5 or Xbox Series X, respectively, will need to buy the NBA 2K21 Mamba Forever Edition for $99.99. The package includes “dual access” to both the current- and next-gen versions — allowing players to upgrade within the PlayStation or Xbox families — in addition to a bunch of other in-game goodies. It is intended as a tribute to the memory of Kobe Bryant, who died in a helicopter crash in January and had a long history with NBA 2K, having appeared on the covers of NBA 2K10 and NBA 2K17.
 
The price increase isn’t out of the blue: as games become more and more complex and detailed, it becomes more and more expensive for developers to create a single title. And we’ve already started to see prices creep upward in the current generation with more expensive “deluxe” or “gold” editions of titles that include extra bonus content, cosmetics, or DLC.
 
The issue around game pricing was discussed by former PlayStation exec Shawn Layden during the Gamelab conference last month. He told attendees at the event: "It's been $59.99 since I started in this business, but the cost of games have gone up ten times. If you don't have elasticity on the price-point, but you have huge volatility on the cost line, the model becomes more difficult. I think this generation is going to see those two imperatives collide." "NBA 2K21 is a monumental leap forward for the franchise," stated president of Visual Concepts Greg Thomas. "We're combining all of our experience and development expertise to craft the best game possible and for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, we are building the game from the ground up to take full advantage of next-gen power and technology."
