The Sea Of Thieves updates – especially its massive anniversary update released in April 2019 – have gone to great lengths to improve the game’s reputation and popularity. One of those updates was the free Cursed Sails expansion which arrived in July 2018, making it the second major Sea Of Thieves content update. Cursed Sails offered players a whole host of new features including new brigantine vessels designed for three-player crews and the ability to battle against fearsome new skeleton ships. Alongside those new features, the Cursed Sails update also gave players the opportunity to form alliances with other ships and their crew.
 
How to Form an Alliance
If you want to partner up with other sailors making their way across the sea, then you’ll need to look into purchasing and raising up a pennant, which basically tells other crews that you’re looking to partner up with them and form an alliance. The pennant acts similar to a ship flag, flying high above your ship on the mast. This item is good because it’s a visual indicator that you’re looking to team up with others, so you can also look around for other pennants, which should tell you which ships in your part of the sea are looking to form an alliance as well.
 
Added in with the Cursed Sails campaign is the ability for players to raise a pennant, displaying to other players the intent to form an alliance. There are only a few steps necessary to form an alliance, but it’s important that both crews are agreeable to the new venture.
Climb the crow’s nest and interact with the flag box
Navigate to the next tab to find the alliance flags
Select the “Offer Alliance” pennant
Approach another ship that has the “Offer Alliance” pennant raised
Change the pennant to “Join Alliance”
An alliance between the two ships will be formed
More than two ships can be in an alliance at any point, all that’s needed is for the new ship to request to join the alliance using the pennants.
